So, you’ve decided to move, SO EXCITING! Now it’s time to plan, organize, pack, and you guessed it: STRESS-OUT!
Trust me, I KNOW! I just moved, and I’m pretty sure that was THE most stressful thing I’ve ever done. “How did I accumulate THAT much stuff in 10 years in that house?!" Oh My-Lanta!
For the first time ever, I decided to utilize the services of a Moving Company. Thank goodness, after much research, I decided to go with a Company called “Overall Moving”, a family-owned local business, to help me through the process.
Right from the very first call with them, Donavon, the Manager, was super responsive and ready to help me figure out the best way to tackle this monumental task. I had a chance to interview Donavon and his team, and they have been gracious enough to pass along some best practice advice to help us all during our future moves, Here is what they say:
Before the Move
Planning - As soon as you decide to move, contact your moving team. The earlier, the better. They can assist you in organizational advice, packing, purging, etc. Be sure to have your moving company come out right away to not only give you a quote on your move, but also to identify any large pieces of furniture that may require additional manpower to get moved. A little bit of extra planning can save you a ton of time and headaches on your moving day. Be sure to get on their schedule as soon as you can because sometimes, they’re booked out a few weeks.
Packing – When you start packing, try to pack everything in a uniform sized box, being careful to fill them to the top so they stack well, while being careful not making them too heavy. Carefully pack all Fragile items and clearly mark the boxes so that they are handled accordingly during the move. Tape ALL boxes shut and stage them in such a way that they’re easy to get to and clearly marked.
Labeling – Be organized. Buy some colored paper or Labels. Each room gets a color. Write on each box what room it came from and what’s inside, and when you get to your new home, you can post that color on the doorway of the coordinating room to make it easier to know what boxes go where during the unloading process.
Moving day
Pets – It’s important to remember that if we’re stressed, our Pets are probably 10x more stressed. If you can, plan a little vacation for Fluffy for moving day to keep them out of harm’s way.
Movers – They’re professionals! This is what they do. If you really want to help, get out of the way and let them do it.
Thanks, Donavon, Fabian, Sean, Ethan, and Brad at Overall Moving for a great (even though it was still a little stressful) experience during my Move. I don’t know what I would’ve done without you!
