Skunks & Mice & Bugs. Oh My!

Skunks & Mice & Bugs. Oh My!

You’d think that with a title like that, I’d be writing about Halloween, but sadly, I am not. As the weather gets cooler, all the creepy crawlies and cute little forest friends tend to head indoors for warmth and shelter through the winter, That means in Our Homes!

Your Home is your investment, so now is the time, if you haven’t already, to start critter-proofing your home for the winter. It’s usually fairly quick and inexpensive to do and can save you a ton of money in the long run.

I spoke with Ray from Chino Exterminating when I had to call on him for my own critter experience (now THAT’s a story all by itself!), and he was kind enough to pass along some tips and tricks for protecting your Home & Property, and it seems to be easier than you might think!

Smelly Cat – Skunks are cute and fluffy, but not when they’re in your yard, under your home, or spraying your Fur Babies. The last thing you want is Fido running in the house after attempting to play with PePe LePew and jumping straight into your lap. Pew-Wee!!

Keeping these smelly little critters at bay is as simple as keeping trash bins closed tightly and not leaving any food lying around the yard. The skunks will pass through but move on because there's nothing to eat. Pro Tip: Don’t feed your Cats outside if you can avoid it. If you must feed them outdoors, put the food up high so the cats can get to it, but the Skunks can’t.

Bugs – Spiders and other creepy crawly bugs live in trees, bushes, and the debris that most of us have lying around our yard. Keep your Trees and bushes trimmed back away from the house, rake up those leaves that have fallen now that fall is here, and pile that fireplace wood a safe distance away, too.

Mice - Did you know that Mice and other small rodents can fit into an opening the size of a Pencil? Neither did I! Ray says that you can easily block up those teeny tiny openings by stuffing Steel Wool into them. Who knew it could be that easy?

Being proactive is key in keeping these interlopers away from and out of our homes. Spending just a few minutes each day ensuring that our Trash cans have tightly seated lids, our fences are in good repair, and our homes are sealed up tight will prove to be time well spent!

If, however, you find that your efforts aren’t quite as effective as you’d hoped and are still finding evidence of visiting critters, experienced Pest Control professionals like Ray are only a phone call away. They have safe, effective, and humane ways to remove and/or relocate your unwanted guests quickly and efficiently.
