As more families discover and settle into our beautiful slice of heaven—affectionately called “Preskitt”—it’s important that we come together to protect our community from the ever-present threat of wildfires. With growth comes responsibility, and a little kindness goes a long way in keeping our neighbors and ourselves safe.
Between the 2020 and 2021 wildfire seasons, Arizona saw a staggering 4,293 wildfires, burning over 1.5 million acres and tragically destroying homes and claiming lives.
We can all do our part to reduce the risk by creating defensible space around our homes. Here are some essential steps:
- Remove dead plants, grass, and weeds from your yard.
- Clear dry leaves and pine needles from your roof and gutters.
- Trim tree branches at least 10 feet away from your roof and chimney.
- Regularly prune trees to ensure a 10-foot clearance between them.

In Case of a Wildfire Threat
If a wildfire threatens your home, do not stay behind. Your safety and that of your loved ones—including pets—comes first. Follow evacuation orders as issued by the “Ready. Set. Go!” system. Stay informed through updates at https://ein.az.gov/ready-set-go or Yavapai County Sheriff on Facebook.
If you or someone you know has been affected by wildfire, reach out to the Red Cross for support at https://www.redcross.org/local/az-nm.html.
