When we’re thinking about selling our homes, the first question homeowners typically ponder is:
“What can I do to prepare my home for sale, that will get me the most bang for my buck?”
I have a few simple suggestions that will make a world of difference, so grab a pen and paper and follow me!
Walk Through Your Home
Start by walking through each area of your home and jotting down anything that jumps out at you. Does anything look out of place? Does anything look tired or run down? If you were the home buyer, what would you notice?
Front Yard
- Cut the grass and trim the bushes and trees. Curb appeal is very important!
- Flowers can brighten any space, inside or out. Keep flower beds neat, with clean edges and debris-free.
- Place fresh and fragrant flower vases inside your home.
Entryway
- Ensure the front door is fresh and clean. Paint, varnish, or clean it as needed.
- Hang a welcoming wreath or seasonal decoration.
- Sweep the porch and keep it free from unsightly deposits from birds.
- Add a new welcome mat outside and a mat inside for guests to wipe their feet.
Smells
Smells, smells, smells… We’ve all heard the expression “nose blind,” and it’s a real thing. While we love our furry family members, we can become accustomed to their smells. It’s important to:
- Eliminate sources of odors such as litter boxes, pet/carpet stains, and dog beds.
- Have carpets professionally cleaned and deodorized.
Buyers need to “see” themselves in your home, but if they can’t get past the smell, they won’t be able to.
Clutter
Oh my gosh, Becky! Look at all that clutter!
- Remove items you don’t use daily from every room.
- Thin out closets and pack away items stored on upper shelves.
- Buyers will overlook moving boxes in the garage but not cluttered closets.
It all comes down to staging. Your home should appear clean and spacious, with plenty of room for storage.
